Activity 2: Celebrating Diversity [4 points]

For this activity we are going to become more familiar with some of these amazing indigenous communities. Please click on the links below to learn more about these fascinating groups.

Ainu People

Australian Aboriginal People

The Inuit People

Papuan People

The Maya People

Once you have finished learning about these groups, please choose the two that interest you the most.

On your blog tell us the names of the two groups that you chose and then tell us at least two interesting facts about each group. To earn full points, you must provide two facts about both groups - 4 facts in total.

I am doing The Inuit People and Australian Aboriginal People

  • Aboriginal Australians have lived on the continent for over 50,000 years.
  • All Aboriginal Australians are related to groups indigenous to Australia.
  • Between 1910 and 1970, government policies of assimilation led to between 10 and 33 percent of Aboriginal Australian children being forcibly removed from their homes
  • Humans are thought to have migrated to Northern Australia from Asia using primitive boats.

  • There are four Inuit regions in Canada, collectively known as Inuit Nunangat.
  • The term “Inuit Nunangat” is a Canadian Inuit term that includes land, water, and ice.
  • Inuit consider the land, water, and ice, of our homeland to be integral to our culture and our way of life.
  •  Many families are struggling to meet their basic needs in areas such as safety, housing, and getting enough food to eat.

  1. Hello Priya,

It’s Leisha from the Summer Learning Journey again.

Wow, you have found some awesome facts about the Inuit and Australian Aboriginal people! What was the most interesting fact that you found out? I thought it was interesting to learn where the term “Inuit Nunangat” came from.

Had you heard about either of these indigenous cultures before? If yes, what did you know about them?

Keep up the great work Priya!
